Why does my 7 1/2 year old son have stinky hair and how to get rid of it?!?

At first I thought it was from his winter hat so I have been washing that everytime I do laundry. We used Johnson and Johsnon (no tears) shampoo and now switched to Paul Mitchell tea tree invigorating shampoo. He'd shower every other day before and now I had him shower every day this past weekend. After washing his hair twice in one shower last night even it still had a stinky smell to it with hint of shampoo smell! He has fine hair and short buzz cut style. Anyone know why it's happening and how to get rid of the smell?

it's probably his scalp. use a non-greasy shampoo. try organic brands and don't put conditioner on his roots just the ends.

I thought it was just me...my hair smells odd no matter how much I wash it. I recently started rinsing, then massaging baking soda in and rinsing again, which helps a bit.

Use conditioner to get rid of the extra shampoo left in the hair. I used to have that happen to me as a kid. Does his scalp smell like soured owl sh*t? After I started using conditioner to get the excess shampoo out, my scalp quit smelling.

there might be something in his diet that is disagreeing with him... alot of meat(protien) can make you smell or not eating breads, rice, and any other food item... try giving him more breads and veggies.

I believe that you should consult either your hairdresser or your doctor about this one as it seems as if it is not him but his actual hair. :)

He might not be rinsing properly. Kids his age (especially boys) don't master that for a few years yet.

Using the Tea Tree will help, but if it persists after a month of using the Tea Tree and you are *positive* he is rinsing it all out completely, then go see a doctor, because the smell could be a sign of a dermatological issue or some kind of illness.

Good luck to you!

Someone I know has stinky hair. It's because he doesn't rinse out the shampoo nor take showers often enough. Are you sure this isn't the case? It sounds like you are.

Make sure that he is really cleaning his hair as he should and is rinsing it out.

It could be his diet and maybe it's a symptom of a medical problem. It could be that the shampoo doesn't agree with his hair type. I would switch again.

Did you wash his hair or does he wash it by himself? he might not be rinsing out all the shampoo, causing the hair to be stinky., or it could be something in his diet...maybe he's eating too much of one thing. It's not normal for a 7 year old to have smelly hair already, check with ur doctor

It could be a medical condition that may need to be treated. I'm no doctor when it comes to this, but maybe you should ask your child's doctor for some tips on how to control your son's hair condition. He may prescribe medicated shampoo.

Hair is in fact skin.So it smells like skin of other parts. He should give up non -vegetarian food and consult a Homeopathic physician.

I'm guessing his head sweats alot, maybe when wearing his hat but probably most likely when hes sleeping. It could be what i have right now and the Dr. said it was a fungal infection. Does it itch? Mine just a little and thats how it spreads (on his head) It dosn't spread to other people. It could be accompanied by dandruff but not always and can also get into his eyebrows. Does it smell worse when the hair is newly washed or wet from rain?

The remedy is Salicylic Acid - Betamethasone (Ram) also known as

Ratio Topisalic Lot

Its a lotion and it makes the head stink even more when you apply it. It has to be applied to the scalp every night for 3 weeks. JFYI my 30 ml bottle cost $20. and i don't think its going to last for 3 weeks. Ask the pharmacist if this is just $2.rubbing alcohol....thats sure what it smells like.
